How to clean cooling fan in Acer Aspire 3003LM laptop

Acer Aspire 3003LM fan
This guide explains how to access and clean the cooling fan in an Acer Aspire 3003LM laptop. Most likely this guide will work for many other Aspire laptops.
Does your laptop shut down without any reason? Does it feel hot on the bottom? Does the cooling fan work all the time and it’s very loud? If you answer yes on all three questions, most likely your laptop experience overheating.

After about a year or two of use, many laptops build up layers of fluff in the fan area that are thick enough to stop the flow of air. This means the CPU is not being cooled properly, it overheats, and the safety mechanism kicks in and shuts the computer down. You experience it as a reboot.
You can clean the fan and heatsink with compressed air. Buy a can of compressed air in a local home improvement store and spray it inside the cooling module until all dust is gone.

How to replace or upgrade memory in Acer Aspire 5500 series laptops

replace or upgrade memory in Acer Aspire 5500
This guide explains how to replace or upgrade memory modules in Acer Aspire 5500 series laptop. Thanks to benardcometh.blogspot.com
Fortunately, both memory modules can be easily accessed through the bottom of the laptop. It makes the memory upgrade a five minute procedure.
According to Crucial, Acer Aspire 5500 series laptops can handle up to 4GB RAM total and you can install up to 2GB RAM module into each memory slot. Use Crucial Memory Advisor tool to find the correct memory type.

Notebook starts to boot then shuts down and repeats the cycle

When I try to turn on my notebook the key board lights up, it starts to boot then stops, shuts down and repeats the cycle. The screen does not come up during all of this. The cycle is about tree to four seconds long. It has been suggested that the power supply might be bad. What do you think? Also I am having some trouble getting this thing apart to inspect for loose connections. How do I open this sucker up ? Thank you for any help you can give me! This is a HP Pavilion ze 4400 notebook.
Does this happen if you start the laptop on the battery power, without power supply plugged in? If yes, then most likely it’s not the power supply problem.
First of all I would check the memory. Try reseating the memory module, make sure the contacts on the module are clean. Try moving it from one slot to another. If reseating will not help, find a known good memory stick and test the laptop again. Try starting the laptop without the hard drive. Sometimes a failed hard drive can halt entire system.
Finally, minimize the laptop as much as you can. Check all connections. Remove all devices and leave only three main parts: motherboard, processor and memory. Test the laptop with an external monitor. If you still experience the same problem most likely you have a failed motherboard.
The maintenance and service guide for HP Pavilion ze4400 has step by step disassembly instructions. Take it apart at your own risk.

How to fix dead Toshiba Satellite M35X laptop

Satellite M35X bad chip
If your Toshiba Satellite M35X laptop is dead (out of warranty) and you would like to fix it yourself, you should take a look at this post. Apparently there could be a problem with the MAXIM chip witch is located on the motherboard, on the right side from the video cable connector.
Official service centers will list buying a new motherboard as the only solution for this problem. However, a new motherboard is not the only solution. Fixing the old motherboard is a better, faster and incomparably cheaper option. The entire process of opening up, repairing and reassembly of the laptop will not take about an hour.
This guide is only for experienced technicians. You have to be able to disassemble the laptop, remove the motherboard and resolder the problematic chip.
Also, Toshiba Satellite M35X is know for the following problems:
1. Overheating – when the cooling module gets clogged with dust.
2. Power jack failure. In this case you’ll have to remove the motherboard and resolder the power jack.

In this guide I explain how to access and replace the web camera in HP Compaq 6730s and 6735s notebooks.
The web camera is mounted inside the display panel above the LCD screen. In order to access and replace the web camera it’s necessary to disassemble the display panel.

Let’s start. First of all turn off the notebook and remove the battery.
STEP 1.
There are four screws securing the LCD bezel on the top of the display panel. These screws are hidden under four covers.

Remove all four covers with a sharp object and remove four screws found under those covers.
Screw covers have a sticky bottom. Glue them somewhere on the bezel so they don’t get lost.

STEP 2.
Start separating the LCD bezel from the display cover with your fingers. A guitar pick is very helpful and works great as a case cracker.

STEP 3.
Separate the LCD bezel from the display cover and access the web camera module.
The web camera is attached to the display cover with double sided tape.

STEP 4.
Carefully remove the web camera module and disconnect the cable on the right side.

STEP 5.
Now you can replace the web camera module with a new one.
In my laptop (HP Compaq 6735s) I used a new web camera with the following HP part number: 494110-001
Before the repair the web camera couldn’t start. Reinstalling the operating system and webcam driver didn’t help.
As soon as I replaced the web camera module, it started properly.

REMOVING LCD SCREEN
By the way, if you would like to disassemble the display panel and remove the LCD screen, you’ll have to remove four more screws on the bottom (hidden under four covers).

Unfortunately, you can remove the LCD bezel completely only when the display panel is separated from the notebook base.
In order to separate the display panel, follow steps 1-9 in this HP Compaq 6730s and 6735s guide.

Toshiba Satellite 1900. Laptop loses power and shuts down without warning.

This email I received from one guy last evening. He had a problem with DC jack on his Toshiba Satellite 1900 laptop and fixed the problem by resoldering the DC jack on the system board. The problem is very similar toToshiba Satellite M30X, M35X, A70 and A75 power jack issue.
I finally got around to using the guide you provided to try to solve the problem on my Satellite 1900.
The power plug kept not making contact somehow and ultimately it would shut down.
You would see in the Toshiba Power Management Utility in the Battery Power Meter, the charge bar would show “Online Discharging”, which doesn’t logically make any sense anyway.
If you wiggled the plug at the back of the laptop it might make a connection but could fail at any time with no warning if you weren’t paying close attention to the red/green charge light on the front edge of the laptop and discharge the battery.
I took it apart and discovered that the barrel power socket on the back of the unit that is soldered in to the motherboard had over the course of time worked the centre post contact loose and pulled away from the solder.
There is no real anchor for the socket to the motherboard or anywhere else on the case plastic. The solder on the motherboard that holds the socket in place is very weak, there is not much there at all.
Over the course of normal use, and being a laptop people trip over the power cord from time to time adding to the stress of the almost non-existent solder.
All I did was to re-solder the damaged connection, and I beefed up all of the other three solder points on the motherboard as well to try to strengthen the contacts against failure in the future.
I have provided a picture that if you look very closely at the base of the pin as it goes through the circuit board there is a slight gap between the pin and the solder it used to be attached to.
Satellite 1900 power jack repair
I search all over the internet and the only resolution I could find for this problem was to have the motherboard replaced. It appears that is not the case. I repaired it 6 hours ago and it hasn’t failed since.

Toshiba Satellite A105 battery charging problem

Today I got Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712 for repair with the battery charging problem. It is a new model and we do not have a lot of experience with these laptops. The customer complained that the laptop will not charge the battery when it is plugged into the AC outlet.
The laptop failure symptoms:
The laptop will not turn on when I try to start it from the battery. When the laptop is turned off and plugged into the AC outlet the battery charge LED doesn’t light up. I know that the battery is not charged and the LED should light up when I plug the laptop into the AC outlet. The laptop starts fine when it is plugged. When I move the mouse over the Toshiba Power Icon in the lower right corner, the balloon will pop up and there is a line in there: Battery Remaining: N/A.
The problem repair procedure:
You can easily fix the problem just by updating the BIOS. Toshiba says that the BIOS version should be at least v1.30. So, go to Toshiba website and click on Downloads. Select your laptop model and find any downloads for the BIOS. In the BIOS change history you will see the description of changes.
After I updated the BIOS, the battery charging problem disappeared.

Toshiba Tecra 8000 series and 9000 series FRU documentation

Here are the links for Toshiba Tecra 8000 and Tecra 9000 FRU (Field Replaceable Unit Documentation). It’s very useful if you want to take your laptop apart. I’m not sure how long these links would be “alive”. These files are in PDF format. When you click on the link, the PDF file should open in a new window. If you have a slow Internet connection it might take some time to download the file.
Please let me know if these links are dead, I’ll delete the post.
